A funding rate flip is the moment the periodic funding rate on a single perpetual contract switches sign — positive to negative, or negative to positive — between two consecutive settlements. A flip is a directional crowd change, not a benign re-rate: the side of the trade that was being paid to hold now has to pay.
What happens at the flip
Funding is settled every interval against the mark price at the cut — 8-hour windows on Binance and Bybit, hourly on dYdX and Hyperliquid. If the prior settlement printed +0.01% (longs paying shorts) and the next settles at −0.01% (shorts paying longs), that crossing is the flip. It does not have to pass through zero in between; a sign change between adjacent settlements is enough. Flips tend to cluster around regime breaks, the Asia and London opens, and any block of liquidations that resets who is on which side.
Why it happens
Funding encodes the directional bias of every open perp position on a contract. A persistently positive rate means the long side is crowded — market makers, hedge funds, and directional retail are all leaning the same way and paying each other to stay there. A flip means the crowd rotated: some longs closed, some shorts opened, some existing longs flipped the other way, and the new equilibrium now favors the opposite side. Macro repricings, a liquidation wave that drained over-leveraged longs, or a spot move that pulled the perp basis through zero all tend to land on the same side as a flip.
How traders use it as a signal
A flip tends to lead spot confirmation by minutes to hours. The perp crowd repriced first; spot participants usually catch up at the next session. Pair the flip with funding magnitude — a flip into a deeply positive print carries the same conviction as a directional re-position with full margin behind it — and with an open-interest shift on the same contract. A clean flip with rising OI is firmer evidence than a flip on shrinking OI. Watch liquidation cascades downstream of a sign change, especially on thinly traded contracts; many moves are not finished when the rate flips.
Track every flip across venues
AlphaTerminal's /predictive dashboard logs every cross-venue funding sign change — Binance, Bybit, OKX, HTX — and timestamps the contract, the prior rate, and the new rate on a single board. Open the dashboard, filter to your symbols, and watch the flips land in real time. Then open the /terminal to size the trade against the next candle.
